Pioneer Employer Case Competition at Net Impact 2011 The 2011 Net Impact conference was the scene for the lively Pioneer Employer Case Competition, sponsored by The Hitachi Foundation. Miguel Padro, from Aspen's Business and Society Program, helped judge students' analyses of a Harvard Business Review Case about QuikTrip, a convenience/gasoline retailer in the Southern U.S. that achieves competitive advantage through extraordinary employment practices for its frontline workers.
The team from Yale School of Management emerged victorious, fending off stiff competition from teams representing MIT Sloan, Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis, The Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University, and The R. H. Smith School of Business at University of Maryland. The teams also submitted curriculum change proposals focused on integrating low wage worker topics into the curricula on their respective campuses. The team from the R.H. Smith School of Business at University of Maryland submitted the winning curriculum change proposal. |

Aspen BSP Convenes Dialogue on the Future of Business Education On October 11, the Business and Society Program convened a dialogue focused on the future of business education at Levi Strauss & Co. in San Francisco. UCLA Roundtable on The Purpose of the Firm In late September, more than 40 business and law faculty, executives, and representatives from investment firms convened at the UCLA School of Law for the first in a series of Aspen Corporate Values Strategy Group (CVSG) academic-practitioner roundtables on "Rethinking 'Shareholder Value' and The Purpose of the Firm."
The series is aimed at rethinking what we teach and how we think about corporate purpose in order to better serve shareholders, customers, employees, and society. The next meeting in this series will be held at Kellogg School of Management in March, 2012. |
